Elizabeth Street Party, Wednesday 11th June 6pm -11pm, London SW1V

This year, UBS has been extremely fortunate to be the nominated charity for the year to benefit from the Belgravia Traders' Association (BTA) and its annual street party in Belgravia.

The event is a closed street party in the evening and it proved to be a fantastic success. More than 3,500 people attended. The celebrations were opened officially by our President, the Earl of Yarborough, and everyone partied all evening enjoying the delights of live music, a range of bars and food stalls, children’s entertainment rides and face painting, and by chancing their arms at the raffle and Tree of Promises.

The BTA and UBS worked in partnership to organising the event and we were helped brilliantly by a large team of dedicated, ethusiastic, hard-working and generous volunteers, which included those from Imperial College London and JP Morgan Chase Private Bank. We would like to thank all our volunteers, members of the BTA and our kind sponsors, raffle and Tree of Promises donors wholeheartedly for all their support.

All proceeds raised by the event are for the benefit of our charity's work. We hope to have a final figure confirmed by 10th July 2008, when we shall announce it here.

For more information, please do get in touch with Michael McGrath on 020 7602 4263 or by email at michael.mcgrath@ubs.independentage.org.uk should you want any further details. Thanks you all once again for helping us make the evening a superb charity fundraiser!

Wirral Coastal Walk, Sunday 18th May - Wirral, Merseyside

On May 18th 2008, our Development Officer on Merseyside, Sian Burgess, with Paramjit Sangha and Michael McGrath from UBS Head Office, along with our Merseyside volunteers are going to be taking on the challenge of the Wirral Coastal Walk.

This is an extremely popular but demanding day, which involves walking 15 miles around the perimeter of the Wirral peninsular. As you may not know, the Wirral is a part of Merseyside and is an environment all of its own. Even though the walk is always in May, in the past our team has had to battle against the pitfalls of sun-burn, wind-burn and torrential rain.

The added bonus this year will be basking in the glory of Merseyside's celebration of Liverpool being the European Capital of Culture for 2008.

If you would like to help us, please do so kindly by making a donation to sponsor our team of walkers and help us to raise as much money as possible! It is easy to do by clicking on the following link and donating online:

http://www.u-b-s.org.uk/donations or if you prefer, please send a cheque to Head Office at 6 Avonmore Road, London W14 8RL.

Should you wish to volunteer to walk with us, please do get in touch with Sian Burgess on 0151 513 3837 or by email at sian.burgess@ubs.independentage.org.uk.

Any help you can mange will be immensely appreciated by us all! If you would like to read more details about the walk, information is available on the website at http://www.wirralcoastalwalk.org.uk/.

In the coming months we will be hoping to confirm further events that will be held during the year, with details of who to contact for further information.  In the meantime should you wish to enquire about anything concerning UBS' work or our forthcoming fundraising events, please do contact us at Head Office.

UBS' 150th Anniversary Birthday Celebration: An evening with Richard Briers

Dickens House Museum, 48 Doughty Street, London WC1

On 6th December 2007, UBS enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Dickens House Museum with a capacity crowd to celebrate our 150th Anniversary in style in order to raise much needed funds towards our vital work.

The esteemed actor Richard Briers, supported impressively by James Hogg and Lisa D'Agostino, entertained the quests whilst one and all enjoyed mulled wine and canapes.

Both Richard and James performed personally selected readings from Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" and the crowd were treated to the most warm welcome and hosting from Lisa who was in character as Mrs. Catherine Dickens.

The evening had particular resonance as Charles Dickens was one of our charity's founding Committee members and UBS still today, is striving to alleviate the poverty and loneliness felt by those living in inner-city deprivation. We hope that Charles would be proud of the work we are continuing in his memory.

The event raised more than £6,000 towards our work and we are grateful to all those generous people who supported the event by buying tickets, making donations, and by volunteering to help. Thank you!

UBS' annual winter reception - "Rascals & Ruins: The Romantic Vision of James Pryde (1866-1941)"

On Wednesday 13th December 2006 our President, the Earl of Yarborough, hosted our annual winter reception at the Fleming Collection in London's Mayfair, W1.

Guests were entertained during an evening of wine and canapés, whilst enjoying an exclusive viewing of the exhibition along with a talk on the exhibition from Selina Skipwith, the Keeper of Art at the Collection. IT was an opportunity also to meet UBS’ friendly team of staff and volunteers to learn more about our organisation’s vital work.

The following excerpt was taken from the Fleming Collection's publicity regarding the exhibition...

"Pryde was described in his own lifetime as ‘the last great Romantic painter left in England’. He specialised in mystery and evocation whilst ruined and deserted buildings were his trademark. He planned extraordinary sequences of paintings or drawings on bizarre themes: one concerned the cycle of human existence from birth to death, centring on vast four-poster beds, while other series featured notable rascals and criminals including highwaymen and murderers.

The exhibition includes The Fleming Collection’s own two Prydes: the drawing Notable Rascals (c. 1902) and the oil painting The Unknown Corner (c. 1911-12). At the height of his career, Pryde inspired some of his contemporaries to regard him at this time as the greatest living artist. In fact in 1949 he was described as the only twentieth-century painter who could hold his own in the company of J.M.W. Turner."

Tickets were priced at £25 each and in October 2007 we will be hosting this event again once the Fleming Collection's new exhibition is being displayed. Information about and tickets for all our London events are available by contacting Michael McGrath at Head Office on 0207 605 4263 or email at ubs@independentage.org.uk

Wednesday 2nd August, Summer Party at the gardens of Lambeth Palace

This was our third annual summer party; the flagship fundraising event in the UBS calendar. The evening was hosted by our Trustees, and took place in the beautiful secluded gardens of Lambeth Palace, London SE1.

More than 150 Guests were welcomed and enjoyed an evening of champagne and canapés, whilst being entertained by the live jazz from the Russell van den Berg Quartet. There was the opportunity to explore the palace gardens, as well as the chance to meet UBS’ friendly team of staff and volunteers to learn more about our organisation’s vital work. As I am sure you can appreciate, the events we host are of enormous importance to the work we do. They provide us with an opportunity to meet both our long-standing and new supporters in person, publicise the need for our work and the difficulties our beneficiaries face everyday, whilst giving us the chance to raise much-needed funds.

The evening proved to be a great success in raising more than £6,000 profit, which will enable UBS to bring support and peace of mind to the growing number of disadvantaged pensioners in this country.
